Working together to transform our health system to be resilient and sustainable

Canada’s healthcare systems have long been a point of pride and a pillar of the country’s national identity. But these systems are on the brink of collapse, harming healthcare workers and significantly impeding patient care. Urgent action is required.

That’s why AstraZeneca, London School of Economics and the World Economic Forum partnered together early in the pandemic to create the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), a global collaboration that works with academics, non-governmental, life sciences, healthcare and business organizations to develop evidence-informed policy recommendations that will improve the sustainability and resilience of healthcare systems in a post-COVID world. Today, PHSSR is active in more than 20 countries worldwide.

Everyone has a role to play in this because no single group or stakeholder will be able to make healthcare more sustainable. PHSSR is committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders and finding solutions that will lead to resilient and sustainable healthcare systems to serve Canadians now and in the future.

Measures to make Quebec’s health system more resilient

The PHSSR organized an event in Montreal to collect opinions from around 50 health system stakeholders, including: unions, patient associations, physicians, facility administrators, professional orders and many others. We asked them what could be done to improve Quebec’s healthcare system, this is what they had to say.

Together we go further

With the current review of Bill 15 by the Québec government, participants expressed the timeliness of the PHSSR workshop. They also valued the opportunity to convene with a varied group of stakeholders with different concerns and priorities to foster discussions. We asked them for their thoughts about the event, this is what they had to say.

Opportunities to Build a Better Health System

Even before COVID-19, our healthcare systems were struggling to meet the demands of a growing and aging population, the growing burden of chronic illness, and address health inequities across the country – particularly in rural and remote areas and with racialized and disadvantaged communities.

These challenges continue to pile up, with impacts that will be felt for years to come. The Sustainability and Resilience in the Canadian Health System report examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks of Canada’s healthcare systems across seven key areas.

Read more about each, including key recommendations on actions Canada can take to transform our health system for the better.
